How United Kingdom postal codes work

UK postcodes mix letters and digits in two halves. The outward code (M14, BS8) locates the postal area and district; the inward code is always a digit followed by two letters (4PQ) and narrows it to a short stretch of one street. The space between the halves is mandatory. UK postcodes are extremely precise — a full one often covers barely a dozen households, which makes it almost an address in itself.

How a United Kingdom address is written

House number and street on one line, town on the next, county (optional) after that, and the postcode on its own line, usually in capitals. With a postcode present the county can be dropped entirely — Royal Mail sorts on the postcode.

In practice

Where people get it wrong

  • 01

The prefix is tied to the city

M is Manchester, BS is Bristol, EH is Edinburgh. Get the letters wrong and the address reads as false to any British reader, and many forms validate the prefix too.

  • 02

    There is no state layer

Britain has counties, and for post they are largely optional. When a US-shaped form demands a State for a UK address, the county — or simply England / Scotland — is what goes there.

  • 03

    House numbers stay low

British streets are shorter than American ones and numbers rarely reach four digits. A 4820 reads as distinctly un-British.

FAQ

Questions about United Kingdom addresses

Why do UK postcodes contain letters?

Because it encodes delivery routes rather than administrative areas. Letters mark the postal area, digits the district, and the final two letters a short run of one street. That design lets a postcode locate a dozen households — and makes it far more revealing than postal codes elsewhere.

What goes in the State field for a UK address?

Put the county (West Yorkshire) or simply England / Scotland / Wales. The field is not part of a real UK address — most systems just inherited the American form layout.

Are the generated UK streets real?

Street names follow common British naming patterns, and the city and postcode prefix genuinely correspond. The house number is random and points at no real household — the district checks out, the resident does not exist.

Why drop the 0 after +44?

Domestic UK dialling prefixes the area code with 0 (0161); the international form drops it, giving +44 161. Leaving the 0 in on an international form makes the number the wrong length.

The address is fake. Do not pair it with a real inbox.

The part of a synthetic identity most likely to expose you is the email address — it carries your real name, your other accounts, and every sign-up you have ever made. Add an anonymous alias and the identity finally has nothing to do with you.
