How Canada postal codes work

Canadian postal codes alternate letter-digit-letter, space, digit-letter-digit — K1A 0B1. The first letter marks a province or a region within one (B Nova Scotia, V British Columbia, K eastern Ontario), and a 0 in the second position means rural delivery. The space is part of the format, not decoration.

How a Canada address is written

House number and street on one line; city, two-letter province code and postal code share the next (Canada Post asks for two spaces before the postal code). Country last. Province codes are two letters like the US but a different set: ON, QC, BC, AB.

In practice

Where people get it wrong

  • 01

The first letter fixes the province

A code starting with V is British Columbia; T is Alberta. A first letter that contradicts the province code is the quickest way to give a Canadian address away.

  • 02

    Quebec addresses run in French

Streets in Quebec use rue / boulevard / chemin, with the type leading (rue Sainte-Catherine). English-style suffixes on a Quebec address read wrong.

  • 03

    Shares +1 with the US

Canada sits inside the North American Numbering Plan, so it also dials +1 and is distinguished by area code: 902 is Nova Scotia, 604/250 British Columbia.

FAQ

Questions about Canada addresses

Do the letters in a Canadian postal code mean anything?

Yes. The first letter maps to a province or region and that mapping is fixed; the rest narrows down to a delivery zone. So the code cannot be invented freely — a wrong first letter collapses the whole address.

Can I use a US address format for Canada?

No. The province codes are a different set (ON is not any US state) and the postal format is entirely different. Most forms switch validation rules by country, so a mixed address is rejected.

Why do some generated names look French?

Because roughly a fifth of Canadians speak French as a first language, concentrated in Quebec. Keeping French surnames and accented characters in the pool is what makes the generated identity match the real population.

What does a 0 in the second position mean?

It marks a rural delivery area. Urban codes carry 1-9 there, so a 0 alongside a major city name is a contradiction.

The address is fake. Do not pair it with a real inbox.

The part of a synthetic identity most likely to expose you is the email address — it carries your real name, your other accounts, and every sign-up you have ever made. Add an anonymous alias and the identity finally has nothing to do with you.
