How Germany postal codes work
Germany uses a five-digit PLZ, renumbered after reunification in 1993, with the first digit marking a broad region (0 southeast, 1 around Berlin, 8 southern Bavaria). Note that German codes can start with 0 — 04103 is Leipzig — so they must be stored as strings; storing them as numbers silently eats the leading zero.
How a Germany address is written
The big difference is that the number follows the street: Lindenstraße 47, never 47 Lindenstraße. The next line is postal code then city, in that order, separated by a space. The federal state is normally omitted.
In practice
Where people get it wrong
- 01
Number after the street
This is the clearest dividing line between Anglo and German-speaking addresses. "47 Lindenstraße" reads as wrong immediately, and some German forms validate the order.
- 02
The street type is glued on
Straße / Weg / Allee attach directly to the name to form a single word (Lindenstraße) rather than standing apart as in English. ß may be written ss; both are accepted.
- 03
Codes can start with zero
Codes across the former East start with 0. Systems that store the field as a number turn 04103 into 4103, which fails sorting outright.
FAQ
Questions about Germany addresses
Does a German address need the state?
No. The five-digit code locates it precisely and Deutsche Post does not want the state. Fill it only when a form insists, using the full name (Bayern, Sachsen) rather than an abbreviation.
Do ß and ü break forms?
Sometimes. Older systems handle non-ASCII poorly, and Germany officially accepts the transliterations ß→ss and ü→ue. If a form errors, switch to those; the address stays valid.
Why are German house numbers so low?
German streets are short and numbered segment by segment rather than along the whole road, so three-digit numbers are rare. The generator caps at 148 for exactly that reason.
Why do some streets lack Straße?
Because many German street names begin with a preposition — Am Mühlbach, Zum Hafen. Those are complete names in themselves; adding a suffix would be the error.
The address is fake. Do not pair it with a real inbox.
The part of a synthetic identity most likely to expose you is the email address — it carries your real name, your other accounts, and every sign-up you have ever made. Add an anonymous alias and the identity finally has nothing to do with you.
