How Australia postal codes work
Australia uses four-digit postcodes whose first digit is the state: 2 New South Wales, 3 Victoria, 4 Queensland, 5 South Australia, 6 Western Australia, 7 Tasmania. The mapping is rigid — change the first digit and you have changed state.
How a Australia address is written
Number and street on one line, then city, state abbreviation and postcode together on the next — capitals are conventional (NEWCASTLE NSW 2300). State codes run two or three letters: NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS.
In practice
Where people get it wrong
- 01
The first digit is the state
2300 is necessarily New South Wales, 3220 necessarily Victoria. Pair QLD with a 2xxx code and any Australian form will reject it.
- 02
Mobiles and landlines differ
Landline area codes are a single digit (2/3/7/8) plus eight digits; mobiles always start 04 and run ten digits, written internationally as +61 4xx xxx xxx.
- 03
Unit numbers lead
Australian flats are written 12/48 Banksia St — unit before the slash, street number after — the opposite of the American second-line Apt convention.
FAQ
Questions about Australia addresses
Do four digits leave enough postcodes?
Comfortably. The population concentrates in a handful of cities, so four digits cover every delivery area. Precisely because there are so few digits, the state mapping in the first one carries most of the locating information.
Can I spell the state out?
You can, but it is not the standard. Australia Post and most forms expect the abbreviation, and the full name sometimes overruns the field length.
Why are Australian addresses in capitals?
Australia Post asks for the city/state/postcode line in capitals so its sorting machinery reads it cleanly. Lower case is not rejected, but capitals look native.
Where did the 0 go in +61?
As in the UK, the domestic trunk 0 is dropped internationally. 02 9xxx xxxx at home becomes +61 2 9xxx xxxx abroad.
The address is fake. Do not pair it with a real inbox.
The part of a synthetic identity most likely to expose you is the email address — it carries your real name, your other accounts, and every sign-up you have ever made. Add an anonymous alias and the identity finally has nothing to do with you.
